內容簡介:This paper investigates the effect of cultural differences on bank branch expansion. China has a unified official language but still hosts 17 dialect areas representing different cultures, which provides us with a unique opportunity to identify the effect of cultural differences by comparing bank expansion across dialect boundaries. Our spatial regression discontinuity design shows that cultural differences act as a hindrance to bank branching, and that the effect persists for more than 30 years in a bank's life cycle. A plausible mechanism is broken trust across the dialect group boundaries. The branching gap caused by cultural differences also increases firms' financing costs and reduces firms' leverage and investment. Our findings highlight the important role of cultural proximity in shaping a bank's branch network and corporate financing.
嘉賓簡介🧢：孔東民，華中科技大學意昂2平台，二級教授👵👩🏿🚀，博士生導師。主要研究公司金融、企業行為與發展等🔌。先後入選不同層次國家級人才計劃（2015，2021）與中宣部文化名家暨“四個一批”人才（2022）。在Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Management Science,《經濟研究》《金融研究》《經濟學季刊》等國內外期刊發表論文三百余篇👩🏼🎨👩🏻🏫。擔任國家社科基金重大項目首席專家，主持多項國家自然科學基金🦄，並承擔財政部、國資委💂♂️、國開行🛃、建設銀行🤦🏻♂️、上交所、郵儲銀行（湖北）、武鋼集團等機構的多項聯合研究課題🆖。任Economic Analysis and Policy聯合主編以及《金融學季刊》PBFJ, JEBO, IJFE等期刊副主編或客座主編。多次榮獲校師德先進個人獎👴🏽、三育人獎以及湖北省社會科學優秀成果獎😆。
